Coronary heart disease is caused when blockages, usually cholesterol and fat, build up at the walls of the arteries and restricts the blood flow that carries oxygen to the heart. When blood flow slows down it can cause chest pains also called angina. And when blood flow stops it causes a heart attack.

The build up of blockages can come from bad diet, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, stress and tobacco abuse. Heart disease can also be passed down in the family. Eating food with high cholesterol levels and a fast pace high stress lifestyle is the leading causes of coronary heart disease. If you fall to any of these categories, you have a high risk of having health problems that is related to and may lead to heart disease.

If your family has a history of heart diseases it would be advisable that you take precaution especially in what you eat. To avoid coronary heart disease, utilize a low cholesterol diet, exercise regularly, stop smoking, get checked up to know your body’s condition, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eating food high in antioxidants and has low cholesterol can help prevent heart disease. Minimize the intake of salt and sugar especially if you are diabetic as it reduces the risk of coronary heart disease. Fruits vegetables and fish that contain Omega-3 fatty acids can lower fat in blood and prevent irregular heartbeats. Also drinking limited amounts of alcohol can help in regulating blood flow. Regular exercise consisting of 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercises can help strengthen your heart and lungs and effectively circulate oxygen throughout the body.
